normal you should only bale alfalfa in the evenings like 7 pm or around that to make sure its not too dry but also has some moisture to create good hay, and normally it takes about 4 days weather dependent to dry alfalfa down, alfalfa takes longer than grass hay and weather dependance than grass

While I am grateful to farmers, I don't know why they bother.

Mate, I doubt anyone with real-world experience could call that a bad first year. Infact, you actually did pretty amazingly for a first year setup. I think by year 3-5 you will start seeing numbers that can be more accurately used for future estimations on the land. Granted you will still have a lot of input costs like getting your own equipment, but to me those are all writeoffs. ps. Don't forget the money from the bales

I know this is a bit late but next time you do corn or something stalky make sure to plow it makes it way nicer to plant and easier to cultivate
